Racing without shortcuts

Our Approach

01

Fresh thinking.

We train with an open mind, looking at each horse as an individual rather than forcing them into a set routine.

02

Routine, done properly.

The small details matter: feed, fitness, recovery, turnout, timing and the people around each horse every day.

03

Led by evidence.

We use data to support what we see and feel, helping us make clearer decisions without losing the horseman’s eye.

04

Good people.

A yard is only as strong as the team in it. Experienced staff, consistent care and proper communication sit at the centre of everything we do.

Our Team

HEAD TRAINER

Seb Spencer

Seb Spencer grew up around racing, with a jockey mother, an aunt in the industry and his grandfather, trainer Neville Bycroft, all shaping his early understanding of horses. He began his own career as an amateur jockey, riding three winners trained by his grandfather, before moving into an assistant trainer role and later taking out his own trainer’s licence in 2018. Since then, Seb has built a strong record as a trainer, including notable winners such as Archduke Ferdinand at Newmarket, while continuing to develop the family’s racing legacy in his own way.

JOCKEY

Dale Swift

Dale brings over 20 years’ experience in racing, having ridden winners on both the Flat and over jumps. His career has taken him well beyond the UK, riding track work in Australia, America and Scandinavia, as well as working for several Grade 1 trainers closer to home. That mix of race-riding, travel and top-level yard experience gives him a sharp eye for a horse and a calm, practical approach to the job.

JOCKEY

James

James has spent over 15 years working with horses, mostly in racing, with experience that also includes trick riding, stunt work, and high-end fashion shoots. His racing career has taken him to Qatar and Switzerland’s White Turf, as well as a few amateur rides on the track. After training at Newmarket Racing School, he worked as assistant trainer to Jason Ward before a long spell with John Quinn, where he rode some exceptional horses and partnered Mr Wagyu for much of that time.

JOCKEY

Ben

Ben has built a wide-ranging career in racing, riding as both a conditional and amateur jockey and holding senior roles with several Group and Grade 1-winning trainers. His experience includes track work in New Zealand, travelling horses to major meetings in the UK and abroad, and working with everything from Grand National and Cheltenham winners to Group 1 sprinters. Career highlights include Cloudy Dream, Waiting Patiently, Sands of Mali and Ventura Rebel, as well as taking Forest Ranger to contest the Korea Cup.

JOCKEY

Aidan

Aidan began his racing career after graduating from the National Horseracing College, starting with Tony Carroll in Worcestershire, where he gained his apprentice licence and rode his first winner under rules. He has since ridden winners under both codes, worked as a conditional jockey, held senior yard roles, and produced young horses for point-to-point and sales. His work-riding experience includes top-class horses such as Shaquille, Waiting Patiently, Look Out Louis and Archduke Ferdinand.

RACE TRANSPORT AND HORSE CARE

Caz

Caz has been involved in racing since 1995, beginning her career with Julie Craze before riding as an apprentice jockey for David Nicholls. She went on to work for Nigel Tinkler and Paul Midgley, riding out and travelling horses to the races, before setting up her own business breaking in young horses. Since then, her work has grown to include racehorse holiday livery, rehabilitation and, more recently, racehorse transport, giving her a broad, hands-on background across the industry.

RACE TRANSPORT AND HORSE CARE

Tess

Tess started her racing life at 15, joining Herbert Jones in 1975 before spending many years with Jimmy Fitzgerald, where her love of National Hunt racing grew around top-class horses and a yard she learned a great deal from. She later worked for Paul Midgley, mainly with good sprinters, with a career highlight being taking her favourite horse to race in Dubai. After COVID, Tess semi-retired and found her way to Seb’s yard, drawn in by the enthusiasm for the future and the chance to be a small part of a good team moving forward.

Racing Yard Assistant

Danny

He first got involved with Seb through Mac Racing, a racing club they set up with the help of Seb’s grandfather. Little Muddy and Muddy Lynn were the two main horses in those early days, with Seb training both to win races for the club. After taking holiday from his transport job to go racing whenever they ran, he eventually made the move to work for Seb full time. Alongside his role at Chalkstone, he also runs the racing community DigiRacing. He enjoys being part of the yard for the team, the horses and the facilities, and is looking forward to a strong season ahead.

Trainer's Secretary

Maddy

Maddy has over five years’ experience in racing, working as a rider and yard person across three different yards before moving into yard administration at a fourth. Her background covers both Flat and jump racing, including two and a half years with David O’Meara. After a short break away from racing, she is happy to be back in the industry and now helps keep things running smoothly from the office.

OWNER

Stuart

Stuart came into racing from a business background, driven by a passion for horses and a desire to do something different within the sport. He brings a practical, commercial eye to the yard while staying close to the day-to-day rhythm of racing. For Stuart, it is about building something with good people, good horses and a clear sense of purpose behind it.

Measured intent.

Our Story

Steady canters by half past six.

Chalkstone was built around a simple idea: racehorses do their best work when the foundations are right. Good staff, clear routines, careful planning and facilities that support the horse all matter before speed ever comes into it.

Based near Malton, we have created a yard designed for proper day-to-day training and care. The horses are stabled in a calm, well-run environment, with access to a lunge ring, horse walker and the nearby Langton World Gallops. Everything is set up to give each horse the right balance of work, recovery and attention.

Our approach is practical rather than showy. We use data where it helps, listen to the people riding and handling the horses every day, and shape plans around the individual in front of us. Some horses need time, some need routine, some need confidence. The job is knowing the difference.

Chalkstone is not about shortcuts. It is about building sound, fit, happy horses who can improve through the season and keep progressing year after year. That takes patience, good communication and a team that notices the small things before they become big ones.

For owners who care about the details.

Owner Enquiries

If you are an owner looking for the right yard for your horse, we’d be pleased to hear from you.

Chalkstone is built for owners who care about the full picture: the quality of training, the standard of daily care, clear communication and the people around their horse every day. We take a thoughtful, hands-on approach, supported by good staff, strong routines and facilities designed around the wellbeing and development of each horse.

We are also conscious of the wider impact of racing. From the way the yard is run to the choices we make day to day, we are working to reduce our carbon footprint and build a more responsible training operation.

Whether your horse is ready to come into training, you are planning ahead, or you would like to visit the yard before making a decision, get in touch to start a conversation with the team.
